Some important information before you leave home
Please bring old clothing as you will get dirty and your clothes will spoil, a sun-hat and high SPF sunscreen. A good pair of walking shoes and a light rain jacket for the summer months is also recommended, as you may go release sight hunting or tracking recently released troops with Bruce.
Meals & Food
You will be provided with three basic meals per day. Every volunteer will be asked to prepare one meal per week for everyone in the house.
Goods that include speciality foods, alcoholic beverages, sodas, sweets, snacks and luxury items are not included in your package, so please bring your own along. Fridge space is available for keeping your personal items, just mark them clearly.
On your days off you will be able to get the basics in Vryheid as well a few souvenirs.
We have no landline on the property, but all cell phone networks are usually picked up without problems. We do however recommend that you get your cell phone unblocked and purchase a local sim card as that would be your cheaper option.
We do have WIFI which can be used for a nominal fee.
Our property is about 10 km from town (Vryheid), so be prepared for a hard day’s work and quiet evenings. Vryheid is a small town which has a few supermarkets, clothing stores, all the major commercial banks (though no foreign exchange facilities available) and access to general practitioners and dentists. Our vehicle goes into town every day to collect provisions so you will never be stranded needing something from the shops.
During your free time
It is important to know that Vryheid has very little to offer in the line of night–life, so be prepared!
Vryheid is in close proximity to a number of private game lodges. It is in relative proximity to two of Kwa-Zulu Natal’s major game reserves, one of which hosts the big five. Day trips or weekend visits to either of these options provide a fantastic getaway. Further you can organise a field trip to the beautiful Kwa-Zulu Natal coastline which is about four hours drive away.
Close to our place you may want to go river rafting or kayaking, week-end hiking, abseiling or take a flight to get a birds eye view of Vryheid and the Centre. All of these activities are available in Vryheid and can easily be organised.
Please note that such extra activities or excursions are not included in your fee, so we suggest you make financial provision if you would like to do some extra things whilst staying with us. If time allows, we might be in a position to take you to a reserve or the beach, but you will still be responsible for your costs.
Our pets - Allergies
Please know from the onset that we have 5 rescued dogs and 3 cats as members of the family and you will share the house with them as they are all allowed indoors. If you are allergic, it is advisable that you take enough medication with you.
You are working with wild animals and we strongly recommend that you have an anti-tetanus shot before your arrival. We also suggest you speak to your doctor before leaving home who will best be able to advise you on what vaccinations you might need. There is no malaria threat in Kwazulu Natal.
Costs for volunteering
The fees you pay go towards accommodation, food and the constant and much needed financial support for the monkeys and their well-being.
The rates are USD 30.00 per day and costs are worked out on a weekly basis.
2 weeks USD 420.00
4 weeks USD 840.00
8 weeks USD 1680.00
Because you are given “on the job training”, we prefer our volunteers to stay for a minimum of 4 weeks to get the most out of their stay. This is also important for the babies to get to know and trust you.
However, even shorter stays will be welcome.
We need any help we can get...
